In the 16th century, people carried with them a piece of jewelry called a ‘memento mori’ which when translated from the Latin means ‘remember that you must die’. Although these pieces of jewelry were not connected to the death of any single individual, in particular, they served as a reminder of the inevitability of death so that the wearer would approach each new day with vigor and as a blessing. Later, in 1861 the idea of cremation jewelry as we know it today was born, when Queen Victoria immortalized the memory of her dear husband, Prince Albert, by enclosing a lock of his hair alongside his picture in a locket that she then wore around her neck. As the years went by, people began to use other totems in their necklaces to help them to remember their loved ones, including their ashes, a practice that has grown in popularity until this very day.
