Cherished Emblems' Climate Commitment

We clean up after ourselves & help the environment

Ecommerce deliveries have a carbon footprint. So do traditional burials. That's why we support cremation and also support cutting-edge companies that remove carbon emissions from the air.

Believe it or not, traditional burial methods is rather rough on our environment. Each year in the United States, over 5 million gallons of toxic embalming fluids are buried, not to mention the 20 million feet of wood, 1.6 million tons of concrete, and 800,000 gallons of fossil fuels used in burials annually.

Traditional caskets and vaults are designed to prevent natural decomposition and take up over 30 million feet of valuable land space in cemeteries each year. But it's not just about where we build; the impact stretches way beyond, touching everything.

The chemicals we use to preserve bodies, embalming fluid, eventually seeps out and pollutes the soil and our drinking water sources. The wood, concrete, and metals buried do not decompose naturally, preventing nutrients from being restored to the earth.

Comparatively, cremation is much more sustainable. Cremation emits about 360 pounds of carbon dioxide per body, versus the over 1 ton of CO2 emissions from traditional burials. No toxic chemicals are used, and ashes can be respectfully scattered or buried to allow natural decomposition.

At Cherished Emblems, we take the eco-benefits of cremation one step further by incorporating ashes into jewelry keepsakes. We now can celebrate and cherish our lost loved ones while also knowing we are helping the environment. There are also new alternative methods of burial that have started to grow in popularity which you can read about here: Green Burial, and Water Cremation.  We want to support those who are concerned about the environmental impact of the earth and are proud of the fact that our cremation jewelry is designed to cherish memories in a sustainable way along with now being able to offset the carbon impact of shipping our pieces to our customers all over the world.

With this in mind please continue reading about the ways we are helping improve the impact of ecommerce to the environment:

Together, participating businesses have…

  • Removed thousands of tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere
  • Provided carbon-neutral shipping on more than ten million orders

Here's how it works: For every order we receive, a formula is used to calculate the estimated shipping emissions. Based on those estimates, a portion of our revenue goes to carbon removal companies that have been vetted by scientists from Carbon Direct. Those companies use that money to remove however much carbon our shipments created. Any extra funds go toward the further development of carbon removal technologies.

Let's meet a few of the companies removing our shipping emissions.

Heirloom

Heirloom's direct air capture technology enhances the carbon mineralization process. Heirloom's technology speeds up the rate at which naturally occurring minerals capture CO₂ rather than using energy-intensive fans to draw air in.

Remora

Remora captures CO₂ from semi-truck tailpipes as they drive, with the CO₂ destined for long-term storage.

Charm

Charm captures CO₂ using plant waste, converts it into a stable, carbon-rich liquid, and safely stores it deep underground—out of reach of wildfires and soil erosion.
